Phrasal Verbs, idioms y expresiones relacionado con: sleep

Es muy común en España, a la hora de traducir “sleep” que le gente diga “dream” por alguna razón desconocida. En este artículo, queremos profundizar en este tema y ver cual es el vocabulario que utilizan los ingleses en el mundo del sueño.

1-I hit the sack early last night so that I could revise for the exam in peace.
to hit the sack – acostarse o irse a la cama

2-I was dreaming about winning the football final when my mum woke me up.
to dream about – soñar con

3-Instead of signing the contract after the meeting, we decided to sleep on it.
to sleep on something – consultar al almohada

4-We have stayed up night partying, so now, we are going to the beach to sleep it off.
to sleep something off – dormir la mona

5-I always feel sleepy on Monday afternoon.
to feel sleepy – tener sueño

6-Since it is Sunday tomorrow, we can have a lie-in/can sleep in.
to lie in or to sleep in – quedarse en la cama o levantarse tarde

7-Our neighbours had a party last night, and because of that, we have not slept a wink.
to not sleep a wink – una noche sin dormir o sin poder dormir por algo

8-Every time we go running after work, we always sleep like a log.
to sleep like a log – dormir como un tronco

9. She conked out/went out like a light before the end of the film and missed the best part.
to conk out or to go out like a light – quedarse frito

10. After a very long day at work, I think I will turn in.
to turn in – to go to bed

11. We can put on some music now because the baby is fast asleep.
to be fast asleep – profundamente dormido

El último ejemplo es sobre la siesta. Debemos tener en cuenta que en UK no se echa la siesta con la frecuencia de como se hace en España. Sin embargo, si uno quiere decir echar la siesta en inglés, se dice:

-I might have a little nap this afternoon. (nap – siesta)
-I am going to get my head down before we go out.
(to get your head down – siesta o cabezadita)
-I am so tired after that exam. I am going to have forty winks.
to have forty winks – siestita o cabezada
